Behind lot 28 stands one of the best-loved courtroom legends in Chinese opera, usually called the civet cat swapped for the prince. In the story, Consort Li of the Song emperor Zhenzong gives birth to a son, and a rival consort, helped by a eunuch, replaces the baby with a skinned cat. Li is disgraced and cast out, weeps until she goes blind and survives by begging. Years later Judge Bao hears her case, uncovers the plot and restores her. Some editions name the story from her side, some from his, and one names Lord Mengchang instead. The legend fits the moon behind clouds: her honor was covered, never gone. The grade is middle because the clearing takes a very long time.
