Two stories of hidden talent compete for lot 32. One edition names the three visits of Liu Bei to Zhuge Liang, who lived as a recluse in a thatched hut at Longzhong until Liu called on him three times and won him as chief strategist. Another names Ma Zhou of the Tang, a poor scholar lodging with the general Chang He. Asked to submit advice on state affairs, Chang He handed in proposals Ma had written, and Emperor Taizong was so struck that he summoned Ma at once and later raised him to high office. Both tales show jade inside plain stone: worth no one sees until a capable judge splits it open. The middle grade fits, since discovery needs both the hidden quality and someone who can recognize it.
