The five elements 五行: five phases, two cycles, and one useful character
Start with the mistranslation, because everything else follows from it. The Chinese term is wu xing, and xing does not mean element. It means a going, a walking, a phase of a process. The five are not five substances the world is made of. They are five things a process does: push out, peak, settle, draw in, and go quiet.
The English word imports Empedocles, who really did mean the stuff of the world, and the import is why so many English readings of a Chinese chart end up sounding like a personality quiz about whether you are a fire person. Nothing in your chart is made of fire. A character is called Fire because it behaves the way the top of summer behaves.
Everything the calculator prints, from which character stands for you to what the other seven are to you to the score on any given year, is computed out of the relations on this page. This is the layer beneath all of it.
