Guanyin fortune stick 43: Heaven and Earth in Harmony

Heaven and earth adapt, and all ten thousand things are whole;
you work and feed yourself, and rest easy in it.
The whole spread of the world is bright and full;
everything goes as you wish, so thank the sages.

The verdict
Heaven makes all things, every plan gets through, good fortune lends a hand, and lucky signs come quickly.
What it says to you
Here the world is working the way it should. Heaven and earth bend and adjust, and because they do, everything has room to grow. The person in the poem earns their own living, feeds themselves and sleeps well, and the whole bright mess of the world looks good from there. That is the key to this stick: the luck rests on self-reliance and flexibility, not on a windfall. Your plans are likely to go through. Keep doing your own work, be willing to adapt when something shifts, and when things fall into place, say thank you to whoever taught you how. Then plan the next thing.

The story behind the stick

Lot 43 takes its story from Journey to the West, in the chapters where the Monkey King first learns the Way. Leaving his mountain to seek immortality, the stone monkey finds the master Subhuti, who names him Sun Wukong. One day the master taps him three times on the head and walks off with his hands behind his back. Wukong understands the riddle, comes to the back door at the third watch of the night, and is taught the secret of long life, and later the seventy-two transformations. One edition reads the title as his final enlightenment at the end of the pilgrimage. Either way, a creature born of heaven and earth comes into his own, which suits an upper poem where heaven and earth adapt and all things thrive.

Line by line

  1. Heaven and earth adapt and change, and all ten thousand things are whole. Readers take this as the natural order working as it should, with everything given room to grow.

  2. You work for yourself, feed yourself and settle yourself. Temple readers read the line as self-sufficiency: the good fortune here rests on your own steady effort.

  3. The whole array of creation is full of brilliance. Readers take it as a time when circumstances look favorable in every direction, with nothing major standing in the way.

  4. With everything going to your wish, give thanks to the sages. Readers stress the gratitude: credit teachers and those who came before, and success keeps its footing.
