Guanyin fortune stick 67: A Heart Level and Upright

A single golden thread weighs your heart like a scale,
nothing added, nothing taken, neither heavy nor light.
If you live your whole life with an upright heart,
your writing and your skills will all shine bright.

The verdict
A level, upright heart stays clear and calm to the end; keep to your proper part, and all under heaven is at peace.
What it says to you
Picture a golden thread used as a balance, and your heart in the pan. It reads exactly true: nothing extra, nothing missing. That is the good news of this upper stick. It promises steadiness rather than windfalls, the kind of calm that comes from having nothing to hide. Your work will be judged fairly, and plain honesty will show in what you make. The verdict asks one thing: keep to your own part. Don't inflate a claim or shave a corner to tip the scale. If there's a choice on your desk right now, take the straightforward option, and let the thread do the weighing.

The story behind the stick

Editions disagree here. Two lead with a gold spirit testing a son of the Dou family; one leads with Guan Zhong, the great chancellor of the state of Qi, who governed so fairly that Qi became the leading power of its age. The Dou story has a folk flavor. Dou Yanshan, a tenth-century man praised in the Three Character Classic for raising five sons who all rose high, was known for his good deeds. Heaven tested one of the sons, Dou Yi, by sending a gold spirit disguised as a young woman who knocked at his door at night. He would not let her in and drove her off. She turned into golden light and sank into the ground, and when he dug there he found gold. A heart weighed by a golden thread and found true is the image, and an honest man rewarded fits an upper lot.

Line by line

  1. A single golden thread weighs your heart like a steelyard. Readers take the scale as heaven's measure of character, with gold showing how precious an honest heart is.

  2. Nothing added, nothing taken away, neither heavy nor light. Traditionally this describes a mind in perfect balance, with no hidden motive tipping it one way.

  3. For a whole life a person keeps an upright heart. Temple readers stress that this is a lifelong habit rather than one good act, and the lot's blessings rest on it.

  4. Then writing and skill shine bright. Readers apply this to exams, scholarship and craft, where honest work is expected to be seen and fairly judged.

At a temple the stick is not yours until two moon blocks agree: one flat side up and one round side up, a holy cup.
