Every edition we checked ties lot 35 to the Tang monk Xuanzang, who left China around 629 to bring Buddhist scriptures back from India. The real journey took him across deserts and mountain passes, through years of study at Nalanda, and home in 645 with hundreds of texts, which he spent the rest of his life translating. The novel Journey to the West turned him into the Tang monk escorted by three disciples, the Monkey King, Pigsy and Sandy, through eighty-one ordeals. The poem's thorns swept from the road and its three people agreeing are often read as those three companions. The grade is middle because the hard part comes first and the ease only later, exactly the shape of his journey.
