Lot 40 is linked in every edition we checked to Wu Zetian, the only woman to rule China in her own name. She entered the palace as a minor consort of Emperor Taizong, became empress to his son Gaozong, governed in practice during his long illness and after his death, and in 690 declared her own Zhou dynasty. Traditional historians condemned her ruthless methods while granting that her reign was capable. The match with the poem is direct: the red sun sets, the moon rises, yin grows as yang fades, and the third line says the time favors women. The grade is middle because the verdict calls the turn poor for men and warns that any plan starts badly before it ends well.
