I Ching hexagram 36

明夷 míng yí · earth above fire
The sun has sunk beneath the earth: hide your light, keep your principles, and outlast a bad master.
"Ming I indicates that (in the circumstances which it denotes) it will be advantageous to realise the difficulty (of the position), and maintain firm correctness."
A hexagram is built from the bottom up, so the first line is the lowest. You read a line's text only when your cast made it a moving line.
Bottom line, solid
The light is wounded in flight; its wings droop. The noble person on the road goes three days without eating. Wherever he goes, his host speaks against him.
You leave a bad situation early, and it costs you: hunger, gossip, doubt. Accept the discomfort. Leaving at the first sign was the right call, even if people talk about it.
Second line, broken
The light is wounded: hurt in the left thigh. Rescue comes with a strong horse. Good fortune.
You have been hurt, but not crippled. Find the strong help, a fast way out or a capable ally, and use it now. You can still get yourself and others clear of this.
Third line, solid
The light is wounded on the southern hunt: the great chief is captured. Do not rush to set everything right.
You get to the root of the problem, maybe the very person behind it. Even so, don't try to correct everything at once. Change that comes too fast breaks things that were still sound.
Fourth line, broken
Entering the left side of the belly, he grasps the heart of the darkening light, then leaves by the gate and courtyard.
You have seen from the inside exactly how bad this is. That knowledge is enough; you don't need more proof. Walk out quietly through the front gate while you still can.
Fifth line, broken
The darkening of the light as Jizi knew it, the prince who hid his wisdom under a tyrant. Steadfastness is favorable.
You can't leave and you can't speak freely. Do what Jizi did: keep your inner light hidden and intact, play a lower part for now, and stay true inside where no one can reach.
Top line, broken
No light, only darkness. First it climbed up to heaven; later it sank into the earth.
The power that darkened things is burning itself out. What rose so high will come down. You don't have to bring it down yourself; you only have to outlast it with your integrity intact.
Hexagram 36, Darkening of the Light, puts earth above fire. The sun has sunk beneath the earth: hide your light, keep your principles, and outlast a bad master. Its judgment reads: The light is wounded. It is favorable to stay steadfast through hardship.
Wait. Hold steady through the dark and act when the light returns.
A hard season. Keep kindness private and steady; don't force big conversations while things are dark.
A difficult boss or climate. Keep your head down, do good work quietly, plan an exit.

The I Ching reads a moment. For the years of your own life, cast your birth chart; on your chart page you can ask three questions of your own, answered against it, for $2.99.
The judgment and lines are rendered from the Chinese text; the quoted judgment is Legge's 1882 translation, and every other English line is Jade Almanac's own. A cast is a prompt for reflection, not advice about health, money or the law.
