I Ching hexagram 35

I Ching hexagram 35: Progress

晋 jìn · fire above earth

The sun rises over the earth: your effort is noticed, and recognition comes generously, more than once.

The judgment
The Marquis of Kang, a lord who keeps the peace, is given horses in great numbers and received by the king three times in one day.
"In Zin we see a prince who secures the tranquillity (of the people) presented on that account with numerous horses (by the king), and three times in a day received at interviews."
James Legge's translation, 1882
What it says to you
Fire above the earth is the sun coming up, and the judgment matches it with a court scene: a lord who has kept his lands peaceful is given horses in great numbers and called in to see the king three times in one day. That is recognition, generous and repeated. If you have been working steadily without much notice, this is the hexagram of being seen. Notice what earned it, though. The marquis brought peace first, and the gifts followed. The lines warn against the other route, advancing like a hoarding rat, grabbing in the dark. So let your work be visible and clean. If someone doubts you at first, stay easy and generous; trust tends to follow. Ask for the meeting, show what you have done, and stop counting every small gain or loss along the way.

Matter by matter

Love
Things brighten and move forward. Be open and generous; let someone see your real effort.
Work
Recognition, promotion, a good meeting with someone senior. Show your work plainly.
Money
Gains come through honest, visible effort. Avoid anything sly or hidden.
A yes or no question
Yes. The sun is rising; go forward in the open.

The six lines of Progress

A hexagram is built from the bottom up, so the first line is the lowest. You read a line's text only when your cast made it a moving line.

  1. Bottom line, broken

Advancing, then pushed back. Steadfastness brings good fortune. If no one trusts you yet, stay generous and unhurried; no mistake.

You step forward and get rebuffed. Don't take it personally. If people don't trust you yet, keep an open, easy manner. That patience costs you nothing and earns the trust later.

  2. Second line, broken

Advancing, yet full of sorrow. Steadfastness brings good fortune. You receive a great blessing from your grandmother.

You are moving forward but feel worried and unseen. Hold steady. Help is coming from an older woman, a protective elder or a gentle authority, who blesses you more than you expect.

  3. Third line, broken

The crowd trusts him. Regret vanishes.

Others believe in you and move with you. Whatever doubts you had about going ahead fade away, because you are no longer pushing forward alone. Let the group carry some of the weight.

  4. Fourth line, solid

Advancing like a big rat. Persisting is dangerous.

You are getting ahead by grabbing and hiding, like a rat that hoards in the dark. That kind of gain won't hold up in daylight. Persisting this way is dangerous, so change how you climb.

  5. Fifth line, broken

Regret vanishes. Do not worry about loss or gain. Going forward brings good fortune; nothing is unfavorable.

Stop counting what you win or lose on each step. The direction is right and the people above you are with you. Go forward and let the results take care of themselves.

  6. Top line, solid

Advancing with the horns, used only to discipline his own city. Danger, then good fortune, no mistake. Persisting brings shame.

You have reached the top of your push and your only tool left is force. Turn it on your own house, your habits or your team. Firm correction there works; overdoing it embarrasses you.
