I Ching hexagram 37

I Ching hexagram 37: The Family

家人 jiā rén · wind above fire

Wind rises from the hearth fire: a household runs well when each person keeps their place with warmth and clear rules.

The judgment
The family. It is favorable for the woman of the house to be steadfast and correct.
"For (the realisation of what is taught in) Kia Zan, (or for the regulation of the family), what is most advantageous is that the wife be firm and correct."
James Legge's translation, 1882
What it says to you
Fire inside, wind coming off it: the hearth at the center of the house, warming everything around it. The judgment points to the steadiness of the woman of the house, which in the old text means the keeper of the center, the person whose care holds daily life together. Whoever plays that part for you, this hexagram says the private world has to work before the public one can. The lines are practical. Set clear rules early. Keep the meals coming. Be a little strict rather than too loose, because giggling chaos ends in embarrassment. Earn respect through honesty, not volume. So look at your home, your team, your closest circle. What small order is missing? Name one rule or routine that would help everyone, say it plainly and kindly, and keep it yourself first.

The six lines of The Family

A hexagram is built from the bottom up, so the first line is the lowest. You read a line's text only when your cast made it a moving line.

  1. Bottom line, solid

Setting firm rules within the household. Regret vanishes.

Set your boundaries and habits now, at the start, before any trouble comes. Clear rules made early save you a great deal of regret later, and they are easier to keep than to impose.

  2. Second line, broken

She does not pursue her own aims; she tends the cooking at the center of the house. Steadfastness brings good fortune.

Your strength now is in the quiet center: feeding people, keeping things running. Don't chase your own ambitions here. Tending the hearth is the real work, and it pays.

  3. Third line, solid

When the household is stern and scolding, there is regret and danger, yet good fortune. When wife and children giggle and play, in the end there is shame.

Too strict feels harsh, and you may regret it, yet it holds things together. Too loose feels pleasant and ends badly. If you have to err, err on the side of order.

  4. Fourth line, broken

Enriching the household. Great good fortune.

You are the one who makes the household prosper, through care with resources and plain good sense. Keep it up. This kind of quiet stewardship brings real and lasting good fortune.

  5. Fifth line, solid

The king comes to his family. Do not worry. Good fortune.

You lead your home by presence and example, and the others respond with affection rather than fear. Stop worrying about whether it's working. It is, and they know you care.

  6. Top line, solid

Sincere, and commanding respect. Good fortune in the end.

Truthfulness plus a little gravity makes people trust and respect you. Keep both, and keep them consistent. Over time this settles everything in the household in your favor.
