How to read the 2027 chart

The flying star system deals nine numbered stars across a three-by-three grid, one star per compass sector plus one in the middle, and reshuffles the deal every year. Each star has a temperament and one of the five elements; where it lands is what the year's chart is. The deal is not random. The center star steps down one seat each year, 1 in 2026, 9 in 2027, 8 in 2028, and the other eight follow it around the grid in a fixed order, so anyone with last year's chart can write this year's in a minute. Here is 2027, palace by palace, with the element of each star set against the element of the sector it visits, since that relationship is most of what a practitioner reads.

Two habits keep the chart honest. First, it describes the whole building, so the sectors that matter most are the ones holding your front door, your bed, and your desk; a Five Yellow in a broom cupboard is a Five Yellow with nothing to do. Second, every verdict on this page is annual. The whole arrangement dissolves in early February 2028 and re-deals itself, which is worth remembering whenever a sentence here sounds dramatic.

The year spreads everything out

Last year was the tidy one. 2026 filed its entire troublemaker roster on a single north-south line, and anyone who learned where that axis ran through their home had learned the whole year's etiquette. 2027 does what most years do and scatters. The Five Yellow, the most feared of the nine stars, lands in the north. Tai Sui, the year's presiding general, takes the southwest. Sui Po, the year breaker, sits opposite him in the northeast. And the Three Killings occupy the west. Four afflictions, four different sectors, none of them sharing a wall. There is no single axis to learn this year; there is a list.

Three of the four follow from the animal. 2027 is ding wei (dīng wèi 丁未), a Fire Goat year, and the Goat's branch sits in the southwest on the Chinese compass, in the first of the three mountains of that sector, so Tai Sui, who always occupies the year animal's own seat, spends a Goat year there. Sui Po is defined as the sector directly opposite him, which puts the year breaker in the northeast. The Three Killings always occupy the frame opposing the year's element frame: the Goat belongs to the wood frame with the Pig and the Rabbit, whose seat is the east, so the Killings take the west, the metal side, and stay there all year. All of that is automatic once you know it is a Goat year. The one genuine coincidence is again the Five Yellow, which travels its own nine-year circuit around the Luoshu grid without any reference to the animal cycle, and in 2027 comes to rest in the north, the sector that hosted Sui Po and the Three Killings twelve months earlier. The north does not get its exhale. It gets a second loud year, from a different guest.

The element weather is gentler than the star names suggest. The year's stem is yin fire and its branch is earth, and fire feeds earth, so practitioners read 2027 as a supported year rather than a clashing one, a Goat that is being fed. In the middle of the grid sits the 9 Purple, a fire star, and this is the chart's real story. Period 9, the twenty-year span that began in February 2024, belongs to the 9 star; it is the period's reigning star, the one whose arrival every practitioner talked about for a decade. Since the period opened, the annual deal has put a 3, then a 2, then a 1 in the center. 2027 is the first year the period's own star sits on its own throne. Whether that means anything is a question for the schools; what it means for the reading is that the celebration star, the multiplier, occupies the heart of every house in the country for twelve months, and the year's mood, as the charts describe it, is loud in the center and cautious at the edges.

The sectors to use

The southeast, 8 White, is the year's best room. The 8 is the wealth-and-property star of the recent period, an earth star visiting the wood palace. Wood technically restrains earth, but practitioners shrug at this, as they did when the same star visited the east last year: a strong star in mildly awkward ground beats a weak one enthroned. Spend real hours on the southeast side if the floor plan allows, work there, eat there, and keep it bright and lived-in, since the standard advice is that good stars reward activity the way bad ones punish it. The conventional boosters are earth and fire, fire feeding earth, so warm colors belong here this year, and a lamp left on in the evening.

The northwest, 1 White, is quietly kind. A water star in a metal palace, and metal feeds water, so the ground nourishes the guest. The 1 governs connection, reputation, career, and new beginnings, and the northwest is classically the sector of the father and of helpful people, so the two ideas rhyme. The conventional feed is metal, which the palace already supplies; the practical advice is simply to use the room, and to put the desk of whoever is job-hunting on that side of the house.

The center, 9 Purple, is the celebration star at home. A fire star in the earth-ruled heart of the grid, and the period's own star besides. It governs festivity, recognition, and things multiplying; the conventional boosters are living greenery, wood feeding fire, which is a fine excuse to move your best pot to the middle of the house and let our plants guide argue about which one. The middle of a home likes to stay open and light in any year; in 2027 there is a pleasant reason to keep it that way and a modest one to keep it tidy, because a fire star in a cluttered center is the one arrangement the charts do not like.

The south, 4 Green, still favors the desk, at a lower volume. The scholar's star, a wood star sitting in a fire palace, traditionally in charge of study, writing, and examinations, with a sideline in romance that practitioners mention with a cough. The fire palace draws on the wood, so the star arrives a little tired; a student's desk or a writer's chair does well here, and the conventional feed is water, which nourishes wood, hence the dark-blue accents in the prescriptions.

The southwest, 6 White, is the year's complicated friend. The star itself is excellent, a metal star of authority and helpful people, sitting in the earth palace that feeds it, which ought to make it the second-best room in the house. The ground under it is the problem, since Tai Sui holds the sector. The practitioner's compromise is exactly the one you would guess: enjoy the room, work in it, sleep in it, and do not renovate, drill, or dig on that side of the house this year. The southwest is also, in the older bagua reading, the palace of the mother of the household, so the etiquette of the year and the etiquette of the family point the same way: leave her side of the house in peace.

The sectors to keep quiet

The north wants a boring year. With the Five Yellow on water ground, the entire prescription is restraint plus metal. In 2026 the same star sat in the south, where practitioners at least complained that the fire palace fed it; in the north the complaint is different, since an earth star dominates a water palace, and the ground offers no drain at all. So the draining has to be supplied: a brass object, a metal dish, the traditional six-rod wind chime, on the north side. Postpone noisy work in the northern slice of your home, the drilling, the wall-knocking, the garden excavation, and keep the sector tidy and calm. Give it no new red decor, no strong lamps burning nightly, nothing that feeds earth with more fire. A bedroom here is not a problem; a building site here is.

The northeast hosts the 3 Jade, the quarrel star, with Sui Po. A wood star landing in earth's home ground, and wood restrains earth, so this time the palace does not prune the guest; the guest prunes the palace. Where the 2 asks for metal, the 3 asks for fire, which drains wood: the conventional remedy is a touch of red or a warm lamp, one of the few places red belongs this year. Sui Po adds the Grand Duke's rule in reverse, the ground opposite him being the ground one also does not break. Do not stage difficult conversations, contract signings, or family summits in the northeast wing of the house if another room will do, and do not start the extension there.

The west hosts the 2 Black, the illness star, with the Three Killings. An earth star in a metal palace, which is the merciful arrangement, since the palace drains its guest all year. Convention still says help the drain along with metal, the traditional object is a metal gourd, and take ordinary care of health. The Three Killings are the complication: three of the twelve compass mountains, all on the western side, that the tradition says should not be faced when sitting for long periods and should not be dug or hammered. The practitioner's rule of thumb is that you may face the Killings but should not sit with your back to them, which in practice means that a desk chair whose back is to the west gets turned around for a year.

The east hosts the 7 Red, the loss star. A metal star in a wood palace, and metal cuts wood, so the visitor has the upper hand over the ground, which practitioners read as theft, leaks, and things quietly going missing. The element answer is water, which drains metal, hence dark blue in the prescriptions; the sensible answer is the one your insurer would give anyway: working locks, backed-up files, and receipts where you can find them. The east was the year's best room in 2026. It is nobody's best room in 2027, which is the clearest illustration on the page of what "annual" means.

If the remedy talk sounds transactional, it helps to know what it is. None of these objects appears in a classical text. The cures are modern practitioner convention built on the genuinely old five-element cycles, an elegant logic applied by consultants and gift shops alike, and the cheapest correct implementation of "metal in the north" is a steel bowl you already own.

When 2027 actually begins

The 2027 chart does not switch on at Chinese New Year, though for once it hardly matters. By the convention of every flying star school, the annual stars change seats at li chun, the solar term that opens spring, which in 2027 falls on February 4, a Thursday, two days before the new year celebrated on Saturday February 6. Flying star practice runs on the solar calendar, whose February boundary barely moves from year to year, while the festival follows the wandering lunar date; in 2026 the gap was thirteen days, in 2027 it is two, and the chart holds until February 3, 2028. What is actually old here

This site labels its layers, and the flying star year has several.

Genuinely ancient: the grid. The three-by-three square underneath every chart is the Luoshu (luò shū 洛书), the "Luo River writing," a magic square in which every row, column, and diagonal sums to fifteen. Legend has a turtle carrying the pattern out of the Luo River on its shell; historians settle for saying the square and its nine-halls cosmology, nine palaces mirroring the ordered space of heaven, are attested well over two thousand years ago. The star numbers' home seats, five in the middle and the rest dealt around, are this old square wearing names, and the 9 Purple's arrival in the center this year is the deal returning to a square older than the schools that read it.

Qing-era systematization: the flying. The annual rotation, the timed periods, and the affliction bookkeeping as practiced today come through Xuankong flying star method, which late imperial scholars codified and which reached its modern form through the lineage of the Qing scholar Shen Zhureng, whose family published his notes as Shen's Study of Xuan Kong early in the twentieth century. When this page says the stars "fly" to new palaces each February, it is speaking that school's language, a few centuries old at most in its current form, not the turtle's.

Folk religion and the almanac: Tai Sui. The Grand Duke began as the counter-orbit of Jupiter, whose twelve-year circuit underlies the zodiac cycle, and grew into a rotating court of sixty deified generals, one presiding per year. The temple ritual of pacifying Tai Sui at the new year is living folk practice across the Chinese world, and the do-not-disturb etiquette on his compass seat comes down through Ming and Qing almanac tradition rather than any classical treatise on buildings. Modern convention: the cures. Six-rod wind chimes, metal gourds, salt-water bowls, and the color-coded shopping lists are the newest layer, twentieth-century practitioner convention with a healthy retail tailwind, built on the old element cycles the way a franchise is built on a family recipe. Useful shorthand, honestly recent.

If the loud sectors are your sectors

A last word for the reader whose front door, bedroom, or office sits squarely in the north, northeast, west, or southwest, which in a scattered year like 2027 describes a good deal more than half of all homes. The afflictions concern disturbance, not habitation. The tradition's warnings are about breaking ground, hammering, and sustained noise in those sectors; nobody classical or modern says you cannot sleep, cook, or prosper on the north side of a house in a Goat year. Keep the sector calm, postpone the optional demolition, and let the permanent rules carry you, because a solid wall behind the bed and a door you can see from the pillow, the rules in our bedroom guide, outrank any annual visitor.

It is also worth saying plainly that the flying stars are one system among several, and this page should not be mistaken for your personal compass.
