Why bazi calculators disagree

Put one birth moment into two bazi calculators and you can get two different charts. Not slightly different: sometimes a different day master, the character the whole reading is built on. That is not a bug in one of them. Four separate conventions sit underneath every bazi chart, each with real history behind it, and calculators apply them silently and differently. Most never tell you which they chose.

So we measured it. The same fixed birth moments went through 8 calculators and libraries, and this page records what each one returned. Our own calculator is in the table on the same terms as the rest, and on the question that matters most it sits with the minority.

One birth, two day masters

The clearest case is a birth at 23:30. Some calculators treat 23:00 as the start of the next day and advance the day pillar; others hold it until midnight. Here is what came back for the same moment, 15 June 1990 at 23:30.

One birth, one moment, and the character your entire chart is read from comes out as Water or as Metal depending on which tool you happened to open. Among calculators that take a position the split is 2 to 5, and Jade Almanac is in the group of 2. We roll the day at 23:00, our reasoning is on the methodology page, and it is a choice rather than a standard. Most of the field goes the other way.

One calculator settles the argument by refusing to have it. mingli.info puts the rollover in front of the user as a checkbox, off by default. Leave it off and it agrees with the majority. Tick it and it agrees with us. Same engine, same birth moment, two different day masters, one click apart. That is the clearest evidence that this is a named and deliberate option rather than anyone’s error.

The four conventions

Three of these are genuine disagreements with centuries behind them. The fourth is not a disagreement at all, and telling them apart is most of the point.

1. Where the year starts: Li Chun, or Chinese New Year Two calendars

Bazi is a solar system living inside a lunisolar calendar. Its month pillars are keyed to the twenty-four solar terms, which are positions of the sun rather than phases of the moon, and the year pillar follows the same logic: it turns at Li Chun, the term that opens spring, around February 4. Chinese New Year is a different animal altogether. It is the first new moon of the lunar year, it can land anywhere from late January to late February, and it is the civil new year the popular zodiac counts from.

A birthday in the gap belongs to one animal by one rule and another by the other. Neither is a mistake. They are two calendars answering two different questions, and a calculator has to pick one.

2. Where the day starts: 23:00, or midnight The one that changes your day master

The traditional day is twelve double-hours, and the first of them, the zi hour, runs from 23:00 to 01:00. Every other double-hour sits tidily inside one calendar day. The zi hour straddles midnight, and that single structural fact is the whole cause of the dispute: if the zi hour opens the day, a birth at 23:30 already belongs to tomorrow, but if the calendar day governs, that birth stays on today and only its hour branch is zi. Both readings have names, the late zi hour and the early zi hour, because practitioners have been arguing the point for a very long time.

Nothing else here matters as much. The day stem is the day master, the character the entire reading is built around. Move the day pillar and you have not adjusted the chart, you have replaced it.

For most of the history of this system the question could not arise, because local time was solar time. Noon was when the sun stood highest over the place you were standing, and the hour branches were cut from that.

Standard time zones are a railway-age invention, and once a whole country runs on one clock, that clock stops matching the sun everywhere except along a single meridian. China is the most extreme case in the world: one zone, UTC+8, stretched across some sixty degrees of longitude, so a birth in Kashgar reads nearly three hours from solar noon on a Beijing clock. Implementations divide on whether to undo that. Correcting is arguably truer to what the tradition meant; not correcting is truer to the number on the birth certificate. Both are defensible, and they produce different hour pillars.

4. Whether summer time is taken back out Not a disagreement at all

This one differs in kind from the three above, and the difference is worth stating plainly. Those are disagreements about how to read a moment. This is a question about what the moment was. If a clock was running an hour fast by government order, a certificate reading 15:30 records a standard time of 14:30, and there is no school of thought in which the certificate is right. There is only a record, and either you check it or you do not.

It is also not a China question, which is the trap in it. China ran summer time only from 1986 to 1991, but much of Europe and North America has run it for decades and still does. A July birth in New York carries exactly the same one-hour error as a July birth in Beijing in 1988.

  1. 1. Jade Almanac. Birth city is optional. Given one, the clock reading is corrected to true solar time for that longitude and the day’s time-zone offset is removed, which takes daylight saving out without asking the reader to remember it. Without a city the clock is read literally and the result says so. No equation-of-time term.
  2. 2. tyme4ts 1.5.2. A library, not a website. It takes no place argument at all.
  3. 3. feng-shui-institute.org. Asks for a longitude and a GMT offset, and moves the hour pillar by the full longitude correction.
  4. 4. bazi-calculator.com. The most complete input set measured. Adds an equation-of-time term no other implementation applies, and prints its whole correction on the result page.
  5. 5. mingli.info. The rollover is a checkbox called Joined Rat Hour, off by default. Local Solar Time is a second checkbox, on by default.
  6. 6. prokerala.com. Requires a birth city, then returns the same chart for cities two time zones apart. It also labels a 1988 summer birth CDT (+09:00) and still casts the hour from the raw clock reading.

Two rows deserve a second look. prokerala.com makes the birth city a required field and then returns an identical chart for Kashgar and Beijing, two time zones apart; a reader who carefully typed their birthplace would reasonably assume it was doing something. And the top organic result for “bazi calculator” has no engine of its own at all. It embeds a white-label plugin, which is what we actually measured. A list of calculator websites is not a list of calculators.

If your birth time sits near one of these lines

Most people are unaffected. These conventions only bite near a boundary, and away from one every calculator here agrees. But if you are near one, it is worth knowing which:

  • Born between 23:00 and midnight. Your chart is genuinely ambiguous. Cast it both ways, as a day-master Water and as a day-master Metal reading, and see which one describes a life you recognize. No calculator can settle this for you.
  • Born in late January or early February. Check whether your birthday falls between Chinese New Year and Li Chun. If it does, your year pillar and your zodiac animal depend on which rule the tool used.
  • Born far from your time zone’s meridian. Western China, western Spain, and the western edge of any wide zone can be an hour or more off solar time. That moves the hour pillar, which is a quarter of the chart.
  • Born in summer, anywhere that runs daylight saving. Subtract the hour before you enter the time, or use a calculator that asks. This one is not a matter of interpretation.

How it was measured

Each probe is a birth moment built to isolate exactly one convention, paired with a control that must not move. If a control moves, the capture is wrong rather than the tool. Solar-term instants were checked against the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan’s published tables rather than against the library our own engine uses, so the probes are not graded by the thing they are testing.

Where the measuring went wrong

Every value here is what another implementation returned, recorded and frozen. None of it is regenerated from our own engine, because a dataset that computed its own expected answers would only be measuring itself.

Three capture failures happened during the run, and all three produced output that looked completely reasonable. A dropdown whose values were not zero-padded silently fell back to “hour unknown” and returned a plausible midnight chart. A checkbox left ticked from an earlier probe quietly changed every later reading. One tool enforces a daily request cap, after which it serves a chart for today instead of the date submitted, and says nothing about it.

Hence the rules this capture ended up needing: read the result page instead of scraping the answer, since one calculator prints its entire correction in plain text and reading it settled two questions more firmly than any amount of probing; check every input against the page’s own echo of what it received; carry no state between probes; and re-run a control in a fresh session before calling any row finished.

Where a tool could not be measured the cell is empty and the reason is recorded. Two sites block automated access, and neither was worked around.

Limits

  • This is a snapshot from 2026-08-01. Calculators change without announcing it, and several of these are actively developed.
  • Some rows are partial. Where a tool’s four conventions were established but not every probe was run, the convention table is complete and the observation matrix is not.
  • feng-shui-institute.org and bazi-calculator.com agreed on every probe where their inputs were comparable. One takes hour-granular input, so this run cannot establish whether they are independent implementations.
  • Probes B1 and B2 fall on 1990-06-15, which sits inside China’s 1990 summer-time window. Against a bare clock reading, which is how every implementation here was probed, they isolate the day rollover cleanly. But a tool that removes daylight saving from a Chinese birthplace would pull 23:30 back to 22:30 and stop testing the rollover at all. A re-run that supplies birthplaces should move this probe off those months.
  • The roster came from US search results for three queries. It samples what an English-speaking reader actually finds, not the whole of bazi software.
  • Nothing here speaks to whether bazi predicts anything. It measures software behavior and calendar convention, and that is all it measures.
