Year of the Goat: Meaning, Years, and an Unfair Reputation

The sign parents skip, and the two Goats who built your computer

The Dragon gets a baby boom; the Goat gets the opposite. An old folk saying holds that "nine out of ten Goats are incomplete," reading the sign as timid, trailing, destined to follow, and enough families still act on it to bend national statistics. In the last Goat year, 2015, hospitals reported scheduled C-sections before New Year so babies would land as Horses, midwives forecast steep drops in deliveries, and when China's births came in hundreds of thousands lower that year, the national health commission itself listed zodiac folklore among the explanations. A superstition strong enough to appear in a government press briefing is a superstition with real throughput.

Now for the defense exhibit. The Wood Goat year of 1955 produced both Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, born eight months apart under the sign of the timid follower. The two men who did more than anyone alive to define the modern computer, neither of them famous for following, share the zodiac's designated pushover year. If the "incomplete Goat" theory could be falsified, that would have done it; folklore, of course, does not work that way, but you may cite the precedent at any family dinner where the subject comes up.

Goat, sheep, or ram?

Every Goat year, English-language media relitigates the animal. The Chinese sign is simply yang, a word that covers goats and sheep without distinction, and the scramble to pick a translation is a Western problem the zodiac never had. The safest answer is the one the tradition cares about: the character sits inside the Chinese word for auspicious, and yang has meant good fortune since people were carving it into oracle bones. Whatever the animal is, it is lucky, whatever the folk saying claims.

The traditional Goat is the cycle's artist in residence: gentle, imaginative, considerate, and happiest a comfortable distance from the front of the room. The classic sketch is the person whose home everyone gathers in, whose taste everyone borrows, and whose kindness is so reliable it gets mistaken for a natural resource.

The tradition's warning is dependence: a sign this comfort-loving can outsource its hard decisions to whoever is nearest, and old sources read the Goat as needing security the way the Horse needs a horizon. The unfair leap, the one the folk saying makes, is from "gentle" to "weak." The tradition itself never quite says that; it says the Goat endures quietly, which four thousand years of shepherds could have told anyone is a different thing.

Standard disclosure, standing: no birth year shapes a person. In the Goat's case the disclosure has teeth, because an entire superstition of "incomplete" children rests on believing otherwise, and the two names at the top of this page are what that belief is worth.

The Goat completes the Wood trine with the Rabbit and the Pig, the cycle's gentle circle, and tradition rates the trio's pairings among the warmest available: three signs that measure success in comfort given, tables filled, and quiet kept. Households in this triangle are the ones the other signs visit to remember what calm feels like.

The secret friend is the Horse, next door on the wheel, and it is the alliance of opposites at its best: the cycle's homebody bound to its wanderer, each holding the other's missing half. Tradition says the Horse brings the road home to the Goat, and the Goat gives the Horse a reason to come back.

The clash is the Ox, seated directly opposite: comfort versus endurance, the pillow versus the plow. The traditional read is mutual bafflement rather than fireworks. As with every line on the wheel, real couples override it daily and are entirely within their rights.

Traditional readings place Goats where taste and care are the product: the arts, design, teaching, healing professions, hospitality, craftsmanship of every kind. This is the cycle's aesthete, and old sources note that Goats do their best work in sheltered conditions, behind a good manager, inside a stable team, and their worst under raw exposure.

The warning label is self-effacement. A Goat's work is often better than its owner's account of it, and the classic counsel is to keep a Horse or a Pig nearby to do the announcing, and to remember that declining to negotiate is also a negotiating position, just a bad one.

The seat that once held a horse

The Goat's chair has the strangest tenancy record in the cycle. In the Qin dynasty daybooks buried at Shuihudi around 217 BCE, the oldest zodiac-shaped list known, the branch the goat now holds appears to be occupied, as scholars reconstruct it, by a horse, while the horse's modern seat held a deer. By the first-century Lunheng the modern arrangement is settled: the branch wei belongs to the goat, where it has grazed undisturbed ever since. The zodiac's early centuries, in other words, involved at least one round of musical chairs, and the Goat came out of it holding a permanent seat, which is more than the deer can say.

The sign's luckier lineage runs through the written language. The character for goat appears inside the character for auspicious, a connection Chinese scholarship has remarked on since the earliest dictionaries, and yang motifs have decorated blessings and bronzes for three millennia. The folk saying about unlucky Goat children is, by comparison, a recent slander; the script itself has been on the Goat's side all along.

The branch hours place the Goat at one to three in the afternoon, the day's warmest stretch, when flocks graze and sensible civilizations nap. The cycle's most comfort-literate animal was assigned the hour humanity invented comfort for.
